Wisdom teeth, particularly the lower ones, can cause a lot of pain and recurrent infections. The lower wisdom teeth are often partially erupted because of their position within the jaw. If you suffer multiple episodes of infection around your wisdom teeth, it is recommended to have them removed. Unfortunately no surgery is risk-free. The potential risks with having the lower wisdom teeth removed are: pain, swelling, bleeding, infection, altered sensation to the lower lip, chin or tongue, altered taste sensation, retained bits of tooth, dry socket. If the risk of nerve damage is deemed high, then you may be offered an operation called a coronectomy. This is where the top part of the tooth is removed, leaving the roots behind, which are them covered over with your gum.
