Lumps and bumps are not only found on the skin, they can develop inside the mouth. A biopsy can involve removal of the whole lump, or a partial biopsy for diagnosis. This is carried out in our dental chair under local anaesthetic.

The procedure usually takes 15 minutes.

The area will be numb for an hour or so and then will be tender when the anaesthetic wears off. You will be asked to follow a soft diet for a few days and carry out salt water mouth rinses. There will be dissolvable stitches that stay for 1-2 weeks.

The risks with this procedure are pain, bleeding, infection, scar and further treatment.

This depends on the biopsy result. You may not require any further treatment. You may require a topical treatment or more surgery.
