Swellings can occur within the jaw bones. Sometimes these can be caused by cysts in the bone itself. There are many different types of cyst and assessment will be made with imaging using x-ray or a CT scan. If required, the cyst can be removed or biopsied.

Depending on whether a sample biopsy is taken or the whole cyst, the procedure can take up to 60 mins.

The area will remain numb for an hour or so. When the local anaesthetic wears off the area will be tender. We advise taking paracetamol and/ or ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. Over the first 24 hours the area may become swollen there will be some blood in your saliva. This is to be expected and is completely normal. You will have stitches, but these will be dissolvable. Aftercare usually involves a soft diet and salt water mouth rinses. You will have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.

The potential risks with this type of surgery are pain, bleeding, infection, swelling, altered sensation, damage to teeth, further treatment.

The changes of recurrence depends on what type of cyst it is and whether it was all removed.
