Dr Lydia Morton
MBBS, BDS, MRCS, FRCS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)
Dr Lydia Morton is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, specialising in skin cancer surgery, facial reconstruction and trauma. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty that requires university degrees in both Medicine and Dentistry. It then takes years of dedicated training to become a consultant is this field. Dr Morton began with a degree in Medicine from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She then worked as a doctor in Newcastle, Brisbane and the French Alps, focusing on trauma management. Having decided that a career in surgery was what she wanted to pursue, she completed her surgical training in London (where she met Dr Rebecca Lewis). With a passion for anatomy, she taught this to medical and dental students at Kings College London University. Inspired by the head and neck anatomy she applied for and gained, a sought-after place on the accelerated dental degree course, where she won a coveted prize in her final year examinations.
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery involves management of facial trauma and deformity, dental pathology, mouth cancer and skin cancer. Lydia has honed her surgical skills in various locations including Newcastle, London, Birmingham, the south coast of England and further afield to Costa Rica, Cuba, Venezuela and Morocco. She has also been fortunate enough to be trained by Prof Shan Baker, one of the most eminent skin cancer surgeons in the USA. Lydia has published papers and articles in specialty journals and presented at several national surgical and educational conferences.
Lydia’s interest in skin cancer management in the head and neck area started because of the complex anatomy in this region. She understands the behaviour of skin during and after surgery. She endeavours to give the best aesthetic outcomes possible by using the natural contours and creases of the skin to hide any surgical scarring.
She works as an NHS Consultant at University Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust on the south coast of England and keeps up-to-date with the latest evidence-based management. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Women-in-Surgery, the General Medical Council and the General Dental Council.
Dr Rebecca Lewis
MBBS BSc (Hons) FRCS PGDip MRCPathME
Dr Lewis was raised and educated in and around London. She studied medicine at the esteemed King’s College London, graduating in 2005. During this time, she also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in anatomy (first class honours), with a career as a surgeon in mind. She then spent over ten years training as a general surgeon in various prestigious hospitals all over London, including The Royal Marsden NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. After developing an interest in the physical and emotional effects of breast reconstruction on patients, she completed subspeciality training in breast cancer surgery. During this time she completed electives in surgery at prominent institutions including Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and NYU in New York. She qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2019, and is on the specialist register for general surgery with the General Medical Council (GMC). She obtained a postgraduate diploma in oncoplastic breast surgery and was appointed as a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon in London in 2021. Throughout her career, she has continually kept her general surgical skills including minor surgery up to date with participation at numerous specialist courses. She has presented her work at multiple national and international conferences, and has published various in respected international journals (a list of her publications is available on request).
As part of her practice in advanced breast cancer surgery, Dr Lewis developed a keen eye for detail and excellent cosmetic outcomes. Throughout her career, Dr Lewis has continued to perform skin and other minor surgery with a strong focus on minimal scarring. She also continues to practice as an NHS doctor, giving back to the system and patients she owes her training to. She is a strong advocate for patient safety, and has continued to educate and mentor the next generation of surgeons. The well-being of her clients continues to be at the forefront of her practice.
