Cryotherapy is the use of liquid nitrogen to treat skin various skin conditions. The liquid nitrogen is held in a compressed bottle and fine nozzle is targeted on the area for treatment. Skin lesions that can be treated are: sunspots, cherry angiomas, verrucas, papillomas (warts), spider naevi, actinic keratoses (sun damage) and many more. The treatment results in a “cold burn” that forms a blister, just like a heat burn. It can be sore for a few days, but then settles down. The affected area exfoliates and new skin will be underneath. It may require more than one treatment. The risks include the need for further treatment, recurrence, scarring, hypo- or hyperpigmentation and infection. It is generally a very safe and effective treatment modality.
